Ruga Ranch

Program Summary: The goal of the rabbitry program is to improve the overall quality of the animals while maintaining minimum output for dog food.

Color Goal: Chinchilla

Total Capacity: 23 large holes - all capable of holding litters/breeders

Breeding Season: September through May

Recommended Strategy: Maintain 6-10 brood does. 3 Herd bucks. Breed 50/50 of does at a time staggered by 6-8 weeks. Litters will be evaluated at 8 weeks with the keepers separated immediately and then the rest of the litter butchered at 12 weeks. Keepers will be re-evaluated for potential breeding status at 16 weeks.

First Round Pairings

Summary/Goal: JJ has qualities that need to get bred into the herd such as firm flesh condition, smooth, round HQ shape, and a wide compact shoulder. However, because he did not carry white he will need to be bred strategically such that we can get does from him that guarantee to carry at least white or chin that are better quality than their dams. Castor Bean is a solid producer and more ideal color match, and also known to cross well to P1 and P2 who are the only chin gene in the program aside from P1s daughter (the chin doe). Turner is undecided because I was unable to pose during first session, however, I do like traits from both his daughters so we will probably have use for him in the future as another good buck option. I like the Gen 2 does more than the Gen 1, however, I do still think there is some untapped potential with correct pairings in the Gen 1 does. The goal this season will be to replace ALL Gen 1 does and produce a few more chin-carrying options in the program. P1 and P2 are the weakest links when it comes to does so if we can get another successful pairing. A chin buck from the Chin Doe or P1 or P2 is going to be what were looking for there, so we want to do those pairings first because if we get a chin buck then we can breed him before the seasons out which will be a substantial boost in the color department. Im also splitting up the unproven does so that were not breeding all three at once so that we can potentially foster to proven moms and also just to keep production numbers up.
