Why Type Matters
If you've spent any time around rabbit shows or experienced breeders, you've probably heard the phrase, "Type is everything."
To someone new to rabbits, that can sound confusing. After all, isn't a rabbit with a beautiful coat or striking color just as good?
While color and markings certainly make a rabbit eye-catching, experienced breeders know that type is the foundation of every great rabbit. Without good type, even the most beautiful color can't make a rabbit competitive or improve a breeding program.
At Hoppy Days Rabbitry, type is our highest priority because it influences nearly every aspect of a rabbit's quality.
What Is Type?
"Type" refers to a rabbit's overall body structure and conformation. It includes how the rabbit is built—not just from one angle, but as a complete package.
When evaluating type, we look at things like:
Overall balance
Body depth
Width
Smoothness
Bone
Shoulder and hindquarter development
Topline
Condition
Proportion
A rabbit with excellent type is well-balanced from nose to tail. Every part of its body flows naturally into the next without appearing coarse, weak, or out of proportion.
Type Is Genetic
One reason breeders place so much emphasis on type is because it is highly heritable.
While nutrition and conditioning can help a rabbit reach its potential, they cannot completely change how it is built.
A rabbit born with narrow shoulders won't become wide simply because it's fed well.
A weak topline can't be fixed with grooming.
Good management allows genetics to shine—but it can't replace good genetics.
That's why we select breeding stock based on structure first.
Why Color Comes Second
Beautiful colors are fun. They catch people's attention and make rabbits memorable.
But color doesn't improve structure.
Imagine building a house. The paint color might make it attractive, but no one would choose beautiful paint over a solid foundation.
The same is true in rabbit breeding.
A perfectly colored rabbit with poor structure is unlikely to improve future generations.
A rabbit with excellent type, however, can produce generations of well-built offspring regardless of color.
Once a strong foundation is established, color becomes much easier to improve.
Type Improves Function
Good type isn't just about winning ribbons.
A correctly built rabbit is generally better equipped to move naturally, maintain proper body condition, and perform the job it was bred to do.
For Rex rabbits, correct commercial type contributes to overall balance, strength, and efficiency.
The breed standard wasn't developed simply for appearance—it reflects generations of selecting rabbits that are structurally sound and functional.
Consistency Matters More Than One Great Rabbit
Anyone can get lucky and produce one outstanding rabbit.
The challenge is producing quality over and over again.
When a breeding program focuses on type, generation after generation becomes more consistent.
Instead of hoping for one exceptional rabbit, breeders begin producing entire litters where most of the rabbits have solid structure.
That's the goal.
Learning to See Type Takes Time
One of the biggest challenges for new breeders is learning to evaluate structure.
At first, rabbits often look very similar.
With experience, however, you'll begin noticing differences in:
Width through the shoulders
Depth of body
Fullness over the loin
Balance
Bone
Overall proportion
The more rabbits you evaluate, the easier these differences become to recognize.
That's why we encourage new breeders to handle as many quality rabbits as possible and compare them to the breed standard.
Every Rabbit Has Strengths and Weaknesses
Even the best rabbits have faults.
No rabbit is perfect.
Our goal as breeders isn't to find perfection—it's to identify each rabbit's strengths and weaknesses and make breeding decisions that move the next generation forward.
One rabbit may have incredible hindquarters but weaker shoulders.
Another may have exceptional fur but need more depth.
Careful selection allows those strengths to complement one another over time.
Our Philosophy
At Hoppy Days Rabbitry, we believe type is the cornerstone of responsible breeding.
Color may catch your eye.
Fur may be the first thing you want to touch.
But type determines the quality of the rabbit underneath it all.
By consistently selecting for sound structure first, we build rabbits that not only meet the breed standard but also provide a stronger foundation for future generations.
Great rabbits aren't created by accident. They're built one thoughtful breeding decision at a time—and every one of those decisions begins with type.
